The Dos and Don'ts of Riding the Bus

The bus was the thing I was most scared of when I got here. I have to chuckle to myself writing that now. It's such a normal part of my life now that it would be like me saying I was scared of eating food. I'm not sure exactly what I was scared of. I think it was mostly a fear of the unknown. Which is the easiest fear to cure if you think about it.

The journey from hating the bus to it becoming a part of my every day life. Happened without me realizing it, but not without some bumps (literal and metaphorical). I thought I'd make a list to inform those of you out there who, like me three months ago, had no idea what it is like to take the bus everywhere you go. For those of you who do live that bus life you will probably find this all too relatable. As these are all things that I have actually experienced.

The Dos and Don'ts of Riding the Bus

Do hold your hand out to signal you want to get on the bus
Don't wave your hand back and forth as this may make the driver think you don't want to get on

Do check that you have the correct number bus
Don't get on the first bus that comes that is from the right bus company or, if you think like me, that is the right color.

Do bring coins
Don't bring large notes (Dollars) as some bus companies don't give change

Do make sure you will be able to tell where your bus stop is solely by your surroundings.
Don't assume they will announce each stop. They usually do but sometimes they won't.

Do get to the bus stop a minute or two before the bus is scheduled to come.
Don't get to the bus stop exactly when it is due or any later as you run the chance of missing your bus.

Do take your phone out and connect to the free wifi on the bus.
Don't get so into whatever you are doing on your phone that you miss your stop.

Do wear headphone when listening to things on your phone
Don't play loud videos that would annoy the rest of the bus

Do come down the stairs of the double decker before you get to your stop.
Don't come down the stairs while the bus is stopping. This may or my not result in you coming down the stairs faster then intended.

Do be prepared for the bus to run late.
Don't be surprised if, on occasion, it doesn't show up at all.

While the bus life can get annoying I am very grateful for the bus systems they have here. I can easily get wherever I need to go without a car, which is pretty amazing. I am also thankful for my ability to walk as the city life gives plenty of opportunities for that as well!

I hope you have enjoyed hearing about my bus experiences.
Till next time,
Tori
